hey buzzbait, where do you start out for cohos? And are you looking for the water to hit a certain temp before you would start?

Last spring my first trip out of New Buffalo,Mi. was on February 27th and I fished just outside the harbor in about 38 fow, 10-20' down if my memory is correct. Caught 2 Coho in about an hour. Still alot of ice around and I really didn't expect to hook up, just had to get back on the water after a long winter. As a matter of fact, the harbor was choked with ice the next weekend and coudn't get out. I don't remember the date I started to hammer them, maybe 2-3 weeks later? For me it's not all about "catching". I also enjoy the hunt just as much as just being on the water. As for the water temp, it's really not a factor for me for spring Coho, I'll be out there anyway!

    Sweet video bluecollar.

We fish out of Portage, Indiana and since my bud's boat has an i/o we usually get 'er in the water around April 1st-15th. We fish off the pier and cast for cohos and browns and whatever else from St. Pat's day till we get the boat in the water.

Thanks buzz, thats sounds fun. Cohos are here in kewaunee but if you get one its very rare. Nice to have something to get after as soon as the ice is gone. For us here its browns right off the bat. Heck some guys got 10, just 2 weeks ago around here apparantly.

Thanks again for posting that video Jeff!

As for the coho, if I'm not on the water on the Thursday or Friday when the first round of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament, I feel like I'm late. Most often out of Portage, Indiana.

Wow, very cool dave. We try for browns as soon as we can get on the ice. Usually the earlier the better. Until then it will be a few trips for brown and steelhead through the ice on one of the local rivers. Always trying to perfecy my homemade slammers/auto fisherman. That still pretty new to me but its pretty cool when it works.

Thanks to all for the kind responses on the video, 10 weeks and counting and the ice that is just starting could be gone!
